Can You Hear It? Hint: it's not sleigh bells

Writer's picture: Judy GarfinkelJudy Garfinkel

'Tis the season to look back to go forward.

The clock is ticking
Something is left undone
See my face changing
Vanishing before my eyes
Cuckoo sings a song
Two notes and she's gone
Hit the ground running
Hit the ground running
There is no sadder song
Than that one song we leave unsung *

The above is from one of my favorite songs, “Hit the Ground Runnin’” by Maura O’Connell. The poignancy and urgency of the lyrics and music get me every time.

I’ve felt the distant drumbeat of a ‘song yet to be sung,’ the grief over not expressing it, the attempt to ignore it when it could no longer be denied, and finally, the ability to give voice and action to it.

It's why I became a coach.

It’s why I love helping people express themselves through the work they choose to do in the world (and in other parts of their lives, too).

This is the time of the year to reflect on what you experienced in 2024 before stepping into 2025. There's a profound wisdom in pausing to say goodbye to the year that was (or is close to it).

I have several end-of-year rituals to support year-end reflection that lead to steps that ignite the year to come (Insight Drawing, The GTJ Dump, and The Word of the Year).

I call this act of reflecting on purpose, Dec-embering, You can find explanations of each activity HERE (2-minute read)

Looking back, savoring our experiences, and listening to the stories our experiences have been trying to tell us makes us the archaeologists of our lives. We can carefully excavate moments, understand their significance, and then, using those insights, become architects of our future

What is waiting, clamoring to make itself real?

What is hidden or on the back burner with a slowly dying pilot light?

What is the song you have not yet sung?

Ready to do something about it?
