What's behind the Stuck? Capacity

Career transformation is a dynamic process.

An exciting one that asks us to make internal shifts

 and

 take external actions

Many clients contact me because they feel stuck

Feeling 'stuck' happens for many reasons.

Behind most versions of stuck is a unique way the demands of change exceed our current capacity.

There it is, my word of the year!

Coaching works when it expands that capacity in concrete, lived ways.

Take Ryan...

Ryan is here on my screen for our second session. Behind her is a gorgeous Zoom backdrop of a library – floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and skylights.

She is saying that she wants to focus on a new resume so she can leave her job."I can't seem to keep up. My boss is changing his expectations of my team daily, and even though I want to look for something else, I don't have energy for it."

And then her eyes close, and she slumps over.

"OMG!" I grab my phone to call 911, and she opens her eyes. She had fallen asleep - that's the level of exhaustion she was dealing with.

Now, instead of the "I need a new resume," we are immediately in deeper waters.

We're looking at burnout and how she values her energy (or doesn't).

With her permission, we're coaching around capacity building – the capacity to steward her energy, to make the mindset and habit changes that will lead to transformation:

new skills like setting and sustaining boundaries and strategies and practices for time management, to identifying and making time for joyful activities (a clue was in that idealized library), and much, much more.

Ryan's renewed energy allows us to step into her original goal, identify the next "right" roles for her, and create a stellar resume so she can find a better fit.

With that foundation in place, she is building her next capacity area: outreach/visibility and professional generosity.

Not all sessions are that dramatic!

But they all start with the same truth: something about the status quo isn't working, and you need more capacity to move forward.

The specific capacity you need to build is as unique as you are. But the process is the same: we identify what's actually in the way, we build what you need, and we move you forward.
