When Reflection Meets Dialogue Change Happens

A few weeks ago, I wrote about September Stirrings, the nudge to reassess whether our work lives are truly working for us. Since then, many of you have asked for the September Stirrings Self-Check worksheet, a tool for reflection that captures the raw data of your work life. Reflection is the first step, but alone, it isn’t enough.

Written reflection works because it slows us down, quiets distractions, and makes patterns visible. Putting your thoughts on paper helps you separate “stories you tell yourself” from the actual evidence of your lived experience. It’s a powerful tool for self-awareness. However,

Speaking aloud is crucial.
Voicing your thoughts in real time activates a higher level of metacognition
Speaking it out loud (whatever 'it' is) in the presence of another person (a coach or trusted peer) deepens clarity and strengthens accountability
Coaching creates a container, a safe space where ideas can be tested, challenged, expanded, embodied, and catalyzed
The Power of Both

Adult learning research is clear:
We learn best when we process information both internally and externally. The combination of writing privately and speaking aloud in dialogue is what moves reflection into action.
You might say,
Writing clears the fog. Speaking lights the fire.
Writing helps you notice.
Speaking helps you notice even more, decide, and act.
When my clients bring their September Stirrings reflections into our coaching conversations, we uncover:
Hidden assumptions driving dissatisfaction
Possibilities they hadn’t considered
Concrete next steps that feel doable and energizing
It’s the bridge between “something feels off” and “I know what to do next.”
Try This
Complete the September Stirrings Self-Check (Contact me, if you'd like me to send it to you).
Highlight one or two insights that surprised you.
Speak them aloud to a coach, a colleague, or even to yourself in the mirror or record on your phone. Notice any shifts in your understanding as you give your thoughts a voice. Take your time and really listen.
Change happens when reflection meets dialogue.
Curious what your stirrings might be pointing toward?
